The Opportunity
A multi-disciplinary surveying consultancy, with a strong and well-established UK National Rating Department, is looking to appoint an MRICS qualified Associate Surveyor, to its’ highly successful team.
The opportunity is open to consider someone at Surveyor or Associate level. The role may be based within the Birmingham office, but other locations will be considered for suitable candidates, the portfolio of work spanning from the Midlands and within the Southwest.
This position would suit a qualified Rating Surveyor with experience of providing rating advice to clients. You would have knowledge of the most effective ways to reduce business rates liability and experience of dealing with the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) and Billing Authorities.
The rating team is going through a period of growth due to an expanding workload which will present significant opportunities for the right candidate.
Core Responsibilities
- Devise and implement strategies to reduce clients’ business rates liabilities.
- Manage empty rates liabilities and submit relief applications.
- Inspect and accurately measure properties for rating valuation purposes.
- Review rating assessments having regard to rental and comparable evidence to determine whether a Rateable Value is excessive.
- Produce and submit high quality, well-reasoned submissions to the VOA as part of the Check, Challenge, Appeal (CCA) process.
- Effectively manage and build client relationships.
- Provide excellent client service and keep clients updated on strategies and progress on CCA’s
- Produce regular progress reports and attend client meetings
- Manage workload effectively and ensure that CCA deadlines are met
- Develop new business and build internal relationships to ensure that all opportunities are explored.
Qualifications
- Degree level qualification
- Chartered Surveyor – MRICS (or other professional qualification)
Core Skills
- Knowledge of rating industry software such as Riverlake, Analyse, RatesData and Calcurate
- Experience of presenting cases at Valuation Tribunal and beyond
- Up to date knowledge of rating legislation and practice
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
- Ability to build relationships with clients, colleagues and external stakeholders
- Entrepreneurial approach with the ability to identify new business opportunities and cross-sell additional services to clients
- Excellent report writing and presentation skills
- Ability to support and nurture junior members of the team
- Qualified Chartered Surveyor with specific experience of dealing with rating valuations (other professional qualifications considered)

- Basic Salary from £40,000 to £60,000+ per annum D.O.E.
